Six Pillars for Protecting Campuses and the People Within Them

A new academic year brings new students, new programs, new people, and new spaces. Behind the scenes, security, safety, compliance, and risk teams are making sure campuses are ready for all of it.

In a new article for Campus Security Today, Dan Harding, co-founder of Sign In App and Sign In Solutions board member, explores the six pillars of a safer, more secure campus and why Access Intelligence is the other AI security teams should be paying attention to.

The idea is simple: knowing who signed in is no longer enough. Institutions need the context to understand who should be on campus, why they’re there, what they have access to, and what needs to happen next.

Six pillars of smarter campus security

  • Access Intelligence: Better security decisions start with context, not simply a record of who signed in.
  • Visitor management: Understanding who’s coming, why they’re visiting, and what they need should start before they reach the front desk.
  • Emergency preparedness and response: Knowing who’s actually on campus - not just who was expected - helps teams respond faster and with greater confidence.
  • Compliance: Reliable, time-stamped records turn audit preparation from a scramble into a straightforward process.
  • Identity and access assurance: Knowing someone’s name isn’t the same as knowing they are who they say they are or that they should have access.
  • Accountability: When questions arise, institutions need clear answers about who was there, why, and when, without piecing together disconnected records.

The goal isn’t to make campuses feel more locked down. As Harding puts it: “Safer shouldn’t mean less welcoming.”
