What does the workplace look like in 2021?

Businesses have been reopening, more countries are being given the green light for foreign travel; it’s been a long road but we’re positive we’re reaching the end and heading back to normality. A lot has changed in a year - COVID-19 (we promise this is the only time we’ll mention the word in this article!) caused huge disruption to many organisations but it also accelerated transitions to new modern ways of working. Trends such as flexible working were already emerging pre-2020 but organisations were pushed to jump straight in the deep end with embracing it in their business.

We’ve all accepted that normality isn’t what we once knew, but what does the workplace look like in 2021?

Digital transformation

Digital processes are no longer a fancy addition to modern offices; it’s the norm for organisations in all kinds of industries. We’re seeing visitor management systems and electronic employee sign in solutions on the rise, especially where these can improve health & safety processes such as health screening and emergency evacuations; making these processes contactless where possible is also a top priority for many businesses and schools.

Over the last 12 months, virtual meetings are all we’ve known and it seems that this is going to carry on. We recently ran a poll on our LinkedIn page to find out how many people in our community are welcoming back visitors for face-to-face meetings and 54% said that video meetings such as Zoom will remain a priority.

Remote-first workplace

One of the biggest shifts we’ve seen in the way we work has been the flexibility around when and where we work. Last year we had no choice but to embrace remote working due to stay at home guidelines, but now that employers and their employees have seen the benefits, remote working is no longer a novelty. More organisations are shifting to hybrid working with a remote-first approach. In fact, Buffer’s State of Remote Work report stated that 98% of people would choose to work remotely, at least part-time, for the rest of their careers. With smart technology such as employee sign in apps to help manage a remote workforce, it’s even easier for employers to introduce remote-first policies.

Reimagining the office

As the hybrid workplace takes over, organisations are now reimagining the office to create spaces that employees want to come to. Many employers still want to see their employees coming into the office regularly despite offering flexible working policies and the best way to do this is making the office an inviting place. Organisations are reimagining the way their office is set up and the facilities they can offer to employees, in addition to introducing new office policies such as hot desking which is now even easier to implement with new developments of smart technology such as meeting room and desk booking apps.

A bigger emphasis on employee wellbeing

We’ve all heard that good old saying “absence makes the heart grow fonder” - well, in a way you could apply that to how the workplace has changed. Not seeing employees regularly for a year has highlighted just how important employee wellbeing is, whether you’re all in the office together or working remotely. As a result of this, a lot of organisations are developing workplace policies to put more of an emphasis on the wellbeing of their employees. With more companies introducing hybrid working policies, we’re all starting to see more unique ways to get colleagues together for social events - both virtually and in-person - to keep workplace culture thriving. Organisations with a visitor management system may also be able to utilise the tools to check in on employees by asking questions when they sign in or out.
