Why the modern office is an increasing cybersecurity risk

As hybrid work blurs the lines between physical and digital security, Sign In App's Director of Compliance and Security, Jason Mordeno, shares his perspective with UC Today on how organizations can stay ahead of emerging threats.

The modern workplace has changed. With hot desking, shared offices, contractors, and suppliers moving in and out of buildings, knowing who has access, and what they're authorized to do, has become more important than ever.

In a new interview with UC Today, Jason Mordeno, Director of Compliance and Security at Sign In App, explains why organizations need to rethink the relationship between physical security and cybersecurity.

His message is clear: protecting the network is only part of the picture. Organizations also need to understand and manage the risks that come with physical access to their workplaces.

Five ways organizations can close the security gap

Jason highlights five priorities for building a more connected approach to workplace security:

  • Think beyond the front door. Security shouldn't stop once someone enters the building. Organizations need controls that limit what individuals can access once inside.
  • Apply least-privilege access. Give people access to the spaces they need, for the time they need them, rather than relying on broad, permanent permissions.
  • Verify visitors before arrival. Identity checks, approvals, and watchlist screening help teams identify potential risks before someone reaches reception.
  • Make security a shared responsibility. Facilities, IT, and HR all play a role, but clear executive ownership is essential to managing risk across the organization.
  • Connect the data. Accurate, accessible records of who entered, when, and where they were authorized to go help organizations investigate incidents and demonstrate compliance.

A smarter approach to workplace security

As workplaces become more flexible, security needs to keep pace. That means connecting physical access, identity verification, and cybersecurity into a more connected approach, while keeping the experience simple and straightforward for employees and visitors.

Jason's insights reinforce an important principle: stronger security starts with better visibility, smarter access decisions, and the right information to act with confidence.
